The key to stainless steel's corrosion resistance: chromium
The core of stainless steel’s corrosion resistance lies in chromium (Cr). When chromium content reaches or exceeds 10.5%, a dense Cr₂O₃ passive film forms on the surface, effectively blocking oxygen and moisture to prevent further corrosion. The corrosion resistance can thus be preliminarily assessed based on composition.
As a dedicated material for automotive exhaust systems, 439 steel must meet strict requirements for corrosion resistance, high-temperature performance, and weldability.
According to Chinese national standards, the chromium content in 439 should range from 17% to 19%. Ansteel Lianzhong maintains its 439 grade at a stable 18–18.5%, approaching the upper limit of the standard.
While many manufacturers reduce chromium levels to the minimum standard to cut costs, Lianzhong chooses to maintain superior material performance at higher production cost. In highly corrosive environments, chromium content remains a critical indicator of reliability.
Titanium-Niobium Composite Stabilization: An Undeniable Advantage
Besides chromium, Ti and Nb provide an additional layer of corrosion protection.
In steel, chromium tends to react with carbon and nitrogen, leading to chromium depletion at grain boundaries and causing intergranular corrosion. By adding Ti and Nb, carbon and nitrogen preferentially combine with them to form TiC, TiN, NbC, and NbN, preserving chromium and significantly enhancing resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Moreover, niobium compensates for titanium’s shortcomings at high temperatures, improving the steel's creep resistance and thermal fatigue performance. This titanium-niobium composite stabilization design is a key reason why this version of 439 can withstand the harsh conditions of automotive exhaust systems.
